Indhu Rebecca Varghese, along with her daughter, Arsheya Mukund, her father-in-law, Varadarajan, and her mother-in-law, Geetha Varadarajan, were on their way to New Delhi to receive the Ashoka Chakra, which was awarded posthumously to Indhu's husband. Mukund Varadarajan. Saying that she and her long-time love interest were inseparable, she began to tell her story. Indhu began her studies at Madras Christian University in Chennai, where Mukund was her principal. Indu was selected as a model for a fashion show after several participants posed for models from different colleges, where she would represent their college at the fashion show. Initially, she refuses to go, but Mukund, who helps her, makes her reconsider her decision to participate. She eventually wins the competition and congratulates Mukund, and love blossoms between them. They soon fell in love and began dating, and Indhu eventually decided that she wanted to join the Indian Army. However, her mother, Geetha, upon learning of this, began to oppose her decision; despite this, Mukund was determined to clear his entrance exam at the National Defence Academy with the support of Indhu and Varadarajan. Later, when Indhu was introduced to Varadarajan's family, his mother was not immediately happy and refused the marriage, unlike his father and two sisters.
After months of intensive training, Mukund was promoted to the rank of rifleman and gunner, serving in Mhowgaon. Meanwhile, when Indhu expresses her love for Mukund to her family, her father, George Varghese, and her second brother, Deebu, express anger and disapproval, because he is a Tamil, and another, an army officer. The conflict escalates when Mukund becomes angry because George tells his commander that his daughter loves Mukund. Eventually, they break up, much to Indu's dismay.
After a year of silence, both families accepted their marriage and they got married on June 30, 2009, after which the couple conceived and gave birth to a daughter named Arsheya, on March 17, 2011. Soon after, Mukund was promoted to the rank of Major General and served in the United Nations mission on the Syria-Lebanon border.
Thereafter, Mukund was posted to the Rashtriya Rifle Battalion of the 44th Regiment on October 18, 2012, replacing the previous company commander, Major Mithun Mohan. He is introduced to the members of the CAT (Counter Assault Team) - Sepoy Vikram Singh, Ravi Shankar, Michael, Waheed, Saifudeen, Rajesh, Venkanna, Major Srinath, Jyoti and Joginder - and their commander, Colonel Amit Singh Dabas. Dabas gives him a brief description of the most wanted terrorist in Kashmir, Altaf Baba. Waheed and Saifudeen took Mukund to the edge of Kashmir. Mukund met Altaf Baba's father, Abdul Gilani, who refused to believe that his son was a terrorist and considered him a freedom fighter. Mukund, saving his money, decided not to leave.
After months of intelligence gathering, Mukund and his CAT team finally killed Altaf Baba, during a fierce gunfight with stone-pelting civilians in June 2013. Mukund's bravery and courage were celebrated by his entire team, but he refused to accept the Sena award. The colonel instead suggested Waheed or Joginder because Waheed had led him from Kashmir and Joginder had taken out the terrorist, allowing Mukund to capture Altaf Baba, during the operation. But soon, another terrorist named Asif Wani, a Jaish-e-Mohammed commander, appeared on the military intelligence radar; Mukund and his team started chasing him. Later, during the gunfight, Saifudeen misfired and hit Mukund in the back, causing him pain. Mukund insists that he will go to Kerala, under the care of his father-in-law, and suggests that treatment at the military hospital will make the authorities realize that Saifudeen has neglected his duty, leading them to dismiss him from his post. He is then treated in Kerala, spending time with Indhu and Arsheya. When Indu cries seeing his injuries, he asks her to promise that she will never cry, even if she dies in the future. Indhu reluctantly promises him and goes to Chennai to meet Mukund's parents and buys a new house. A month later, he leaves and is devastated by the death of his informant, Latif, who was killed by Asif Wani after discovering his involvement in Altaf Baba's death.
Moments before his death, Latif lets Wani know that Waheed and Mukund were the main culprits behind Altaf Baba's death. As a result, an angry mob attacked Mukund and Srinath in their caravan, and kidnapped and tortured Waheed, but Mukund and the CAT team eventually saved him from being beheaded, despite Dabas's help. As the election approached, Dabas offered CAT support to help vote peacefully, and Mukund and his team began educating local children and helping local people vote. Despite the efforts for a smooth election, Team CAT is informed that attacks are continuing on buses and polling stations, selling ballot papers, as per Wani’s warning to prevent citizens from voting.
Then, the next day, as the CAT team sits down for lunch, Waheed tells Mukund that they have received important information that Wani and his men are holed up in a house in Doodhpathri; the entire team is running there in great numbers. Venkanna, Joginder, Jyoti and Hardeep chase away the civilians while Ravi, Michael, Waheed, Rajesh and Saifudeen cover Mukund and Vikram as they enter the house.
Dabas repeatedly tells them to go back because an unknown explosive has been planted in the house; however, Mukund and Vikram are adamant in their decision not to let Wani go. They eliminate each terrorist bit by bit, but when Vikram tries to shoot Wani, he shoots Vikram violently, killing him instantly. Mukund, enraged, threw a bomb into Wani's house and killed him in a hand-to-hand fight. He finally emerges, believing the operation to be a success, but he is bleeding profusely from a gunshot wound. In Venkanna's lap, Mukund expresses his despair over Vikram's death, but Dabas stops him and puts him in an ambulance. Despite numerous attempts to revive him, Mukund breathes his last in Ravi's arms, devastating the CAT team.
It is now morning and Indu's first brother Andrews visits her to inform her of Mukund's death. Indu faints after hearing Dabas' voicemail, but later pulls herself together, remembering her promise to her husband.
Mukund's body leaves Kashmir to the salute of gunfire and wailing of CAT members and Amit Singh Dabas in Tambaram, where his funeral is being held. Ravi, with tears in his eyes, stoically tells Indhu about Mukund's last words. Sadly but without a single tear in his eyes, Indhu goes to the crematorium and looks at his body, feeling shocked. Now, Indhu is receiving the Ashoka Chakra from President Pranab Mukherjee on January 26, 2015, and Mukund's bus is being inaugurated at the Staff Training College, Chennai on June 1, 2015. The film ends with Indhu sitting next to a memorial and feeling Mukund's presence resting on her shoulder, but then disappearing, indicating that he is her soul, which is still connected to her. To her daughter, he will always be there.
